Hoax or Not: Telstra not allowed to provide internet says NTC

QUEZON CITY - As announced earlier today by the National Telecommunications Commission, Telstra may not provide any type of internet connection in the Philippines.

According to Manila Link, NTC spokesperson Romulo Nuevo told the media at the 5 PM press conference, "the whole commission and its associates believe that the expansion of Telstra as an internet service provider in the Philippines is detrimental to the country's best interests."

"We must preserve the continuity of what's going on right now with PLDT and Globe as the two leaders in fast and reliable internet connection. Having a third party from a foreign country will have serious ramifications with how the pricing, inclusive or not of taxes, is done," he added.

Mid-2015, it was announced that San Miguel Corp. was in talks with Australia's largest internet service provider Telstra in a possible expansion to the archipelago. The announcement was met with delight by frustrated customers of Philippine telcos which are the usual targets for complaints with slow internet speed and hidden bandwidth caps.

Nuevo also told the press, "the NTC -- let me say it in Filipino -- gusto lamang namin na tangkilikin ng mga Pilipino ang sariling atin." Claiming that the NTC only wants the Filipino people to support their own and not the Australian telco.
